Five Christmas Eve games you can play with what you have
Christmas Eve games can fill a short wait or bring a group together before a meal. Pick one or two that fit the ages, space and energy in the room. These five need little equipment, and none requires a gift as a prize. Explain the rules first, then let people sit out or join later.
1. A clue hunt and 2. stocking memory
For a clue hunt, write four to six location clues on cards, place each clue at the location named by the previous one, and put the final note or small surprise at the last stop. Keep clues in safe, accessible places; let younger players solve them with a partner.
For stocking memory, the first player says, “In my stocking is an apple.” The next repeats the list and adds a B item; continue through the alphabet until the group chooses to stop. Let players help each other instead of eliminating someone for a forgotten word.
3. Musical chairs and 4. find Santa
For musical chairs, arrange one fewer chair than players, play music, stop it, and let everyone find a seat. Remove a chair each round, or keep equal chairs and switch seats for a non-elimination version. Leave clear walking space and use a seated rhythm game if moving quickly is uncomfortable.
For “find Santa,” one player steps away while the group secretly chooses Santa. Santa winks at players, who quietly say “ho, ho, ho”; the returning player watches and guesses who began the signals. Rotate the roles after each guess.
5. Holiday card toss
Place a basket on the floor and mark a comfortable throwing line. Each person tries to toss three spare greeting cards into it; vary the distance rather than ranking children against adults. Reuse only cards that are yours to play with, and keep small prizes or loose game pieces away from young children.
