Homemade Christmas Gifts Straight from the Garden

During the long, hot days of summer, the last thing we think about is Christmas shopping. After all, that’s a task we usually relegate to the month of December, right? But the truth is, the job of shopping for Christmas gifts is something many people loathe. Parking lots are crowded, malls are jam packed, and finding just the right gift for that special someone can take hours, or even days. What if there was a way to get some of your Christmas gifts ready during the summertime and put them away in storage so they’ll be ready to go when the holiday season rolls around? Before you grab your keys and jump in the car to go shopping now, stop and take a look around your own home and garden. There may be some gift possibilities lurking right under your own nose that are homemade, thoughtful, and very inexpensive.

Many of us raise vegetable gardens in the summer, and we wind up with more fresh produce than we can possibly use. Instead of letting it rot on the vine or giving it all away to neighbors, consider canning. Many vegetables like fresh green beans and tomatoes can be canned and then given away as gifts at the holidays. Fresh bell peppers can be made into relishes, and cucumbers can be pickled and canned. Cans of fresh produce also make wonderful hostess’s gifts when you are invited to holiday parties. Top off the jar with a colorful square of fabric and tie with a ribbon to make the gift really attractive and special.

If you enjoy cooking, consider using your fresh produce to make other items like homemade spaghetti sauce, fresh salsa, or pickle relish that can be canned. For a really nice touch, put a couple jars of spaghetti sauce into a gift basket and then include some related items such as a pound of pasta and a loaf of fresh Italian bread. Other nice touches might include an Italian cookbook, a bottle of good red wine or gourmet olive oil, and even some fresh parmesan cheese. The idea of themed gift baskets based on your homemade canned goods can be expanded into other areas, too. For example, if you’ve made some fresh salsa, include items in your gift basket like tortilla chips, margarita mix, and a bottle of good quality tequila.

Homemade gifts from the garden don’t have to be limited to only vegetables. If you grow fruits such as blueberries, cherries, or raspberries, consider making homemade jams or pie fillings that can be canned for holiday gifts. Nice additions to round out a gift basket with these items could include a new pie dish, or some homemade bread for toasting. Fresh fruits can also be made into syrups that can be given as gifts along with some homemade pancake mix. Furthermore, if you grow fresh herbs such as parsley or basil, consider making fresh pesto at the end of the summer and canning it into small jars to give as gifts.

Homemade Christmas gifts that have come from your garden make nice gift items for almost anyone. After all, everyone enjoys good food, especially when it’s homegrown. Even better, a gift like this is very thoughtful, and shows the recipient that you put some time and thought into what to give them. So if you’ve got a garden that’s overflowing with fresh produce, take an afternoon and do some canning. You’ll save yourself both time and money when December rolls around!

Obtain a winemaking guide, which will assist in the distilling process and allow for the correct wine to be obtained, whether it is red or white. Select a distiller and obtain all other necessary ingredients for the process. Once the wine has been successfully distilled, dispense it into wine bottles that have your names on them and serve it during your Valentine’s Day dinner. Be sure to make several bottles and allow them to become vintage over the years to come.

Organize your eyes to hit great golf shots

As complicated as golf has been made to appear it is really only an eye to hand game that involves using a stick( golf club) a ball and your creative genius. Having learned from some of the greatest players that ever lived ie. Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret, Jackie Burke and numerous others I can tell you that they kept it simple.

The Ben Hogan that everyone reads about is nothing like the man that I knew growing up at Champions golf club in Houston, Texas. Mr. Hogan used to come there often to see his mentor Jimmy Demaret and get advice on his game. During a few of these trips I had the opportunity to get to know Mr. Hogan and ask him questions about how to play my best.

He made it clear that you had to play golf by feel utilizing your own ability to control the golf club in your hands while using your eyes to guide the hands both into the setup and throughout the swing. Mr. Hogan told me that trying to imitate him or any other golfer was not only a waste of time but would doom me to failure.

Through watching some of his practice sessions I can tell you Hogan saw and felt every shot before he ever swung the club. I can also tell you that he said his book was only a description of what his golf swing looked like and not what he felt.

The only thing Mr. Hogan and the other players weren’t able to communicate clearly was how important a role the eyes played in peak performance. I could see that they used their eyes to map everything out but didn’t realize until later how anyone could be taught to use them to keep the mind organized and occupied.

By using the eyes to map out where the hands are going in relation to the target and by using them to calmly lead the hands both into the setup and through the swing or stroke your mind stays busy doing a productive job and your eyes aren’t wandering all over the place. To fully understand and appreciate how important it is to organize and map things out with the eyes try picking something up from a table or a desk while your eyes are wandering all over the room. That is exactly what happens to most golfers because they are trying to focus on the ball, where their backswing is how to get the club to impact and guide the golf ball to the target all in under two seconds.

In order to start using your eyes correctly let’s pick an area three to six inches ahead of the ball in relation to your target and have the eyes stay there in a soft focus until the hands start forward during the swing (no backswing thoughts allowed). Then let the eyes move slightly ahead of the hands until they come to a calm and relaxed finish. The players who can commit to this and practice improving it will see tremendous results. Start with putting and move your way up to full shots once you master the eye hand coordination in your putting.

Obviously this is not the only thing you must be good at to play your best but it is probably the most important one.

Fun and Easy Easter Baskets Ideas

It’s that time of year again: Easter! And as always, you need to create some fun Easter baskets for the children in your life. Whether you are looking for something non-traditional, or trying to come up with a basket that’s fun and yet doesn’t break the bank, or even making your first Easter basket, this article will have something for you.

Each of these baskets are inexpensive and great time savers. They are easy to construct and can be put together in less than an hour. So hop to it and go ahead and create the perfect basket; here there is something for everyone!

Forest Easter Basket

If you know a child that’s an avid hiker/camper/outdoor lover, this is the basket for them. Before you start building the basket, get these items together:

  • Brown wooden basket
  • Brown and green Easter grass or shredded paper of the same colors
  • Construction paper in green and orange
  • Your choice of plastic, chocolate or hard boiled eggs
  • Animal shaped cookies or crackers
  • A natural appearing plush rabbit
  • Butterflies and ladybugs 3-D stickers (optional)

Once you’ve gathered together everything, it’s time to create the basket.

1. To represent soil, place the brown paper or Easter grass at the bottom of the basket. Then, layer over the brown with the green in order to represent grass. This is a good base to start with.

2. Next you can add the bunny. You can either use it as a centerpiece and place the plush toy in the middle, or you can place it towards the back so it’s a “supporting” element.

3. Then it’s time to start adding the eggs. Place them all around the bunny. If you want a very natural looking basket, don’t use too colorful of eggs. But if you like a lot of color, or only have colored eggs on hand, use them.

4. Next, you can arrange the animal cookies or crackers. Put them among the eggs, so that it looks like they are peeking around them.

5. Next it’s time to use the green and orange construction paper into “carrots. Cut long triangles from the orange paper for the carrot, and then add the green paper by cutting and shredding a small rectangle that you can tape to the carrot’s base for its leaves. You can decide how many of these you need.

6. Lastly, if you decided to get some stickers, place a couple of lady bugs and/or butterfly stickers to the handle, as if they were crawling up it. This will give the basket a very forest friendly look.

So now you have the perfect Easter basket for an outdoor lover!

Farm Easter Basket

This basket is very colorful and utilizes the traditional farm animals as symbols of Easter. For this basket you will need:

  • A Small or Medium basket (any color)
  • Green and yellow Easter grass or shredded paper
  • Plastic, chocolate or hard boiled eggs
  • 4 -5 fuzzy plush chicks or baby ducks
  • Optional: Twizzlers or gummy worms
  • Optional: Flower 3-D stickers or colorful ribbon

Now it’s time to build this fun basket:

1. First, you should mix together the green and yellow Easter grass until it simulates farm hay. Then fill the basket almost full with the mixture.

2. Next, take your stuffed chicks or baby ducks and place them on top of the hay. Arrange them however you see fit. This could be at random, so they’re evenly spaced, or so they are arranged in a line as if they were following each other.

3. Then place the eggs all around the plush toys. If you want to add an extra, cute touch, break some of the egg shells so it looks like they just hatched. Put some of the shells on their head or beside them.

4. Next, if you want to add more candy to the basket, because after all, Easter is a big candy holiday, set some twizzlers or gummy worms around the chicks. This way it looks like they are about to have lunch! Yummy!

5. Your last step could be to add some colorful flower stickers to the basket, because what spring scene is complete without freshly blooming flowers? Also, take the ribbon and tie it around the handle for that perfect finishing touch.

So there you have it, an adorable farm themed Easter basket! It seems that you can put all your chicks and eggs in one basket after all!

As you can see, Easter baskets can be a really fun way to flex your creative muscle, and create some wonderful new memories of one of the biggest holidays around! Happy Easter!

Romantic Surprise For Boyfriend

Getting something special for your boyfriend is essential no matter what stage you are in the connection. Romantic gifts can be something special he really wants, even though you might not contemplate it romantic or something that sends an intimate messages. Depending on the stage of the relationship, your finances or the thought behind the present, it can be large or small.

What Is Romantic?

Romantic gifts may include a number of different types of items. The idea behind the gift is what makes it romantic. If he mentions something which he’d always wanted like a kid, such as one of the original Mario Brothers or Donkey Kong for the Nintendo he available at a garage sale, that’s your queue for that gift. You have to admit, that’s not what most people would call romantic however it will be the most romantic surprise for him. Because you listened and cared enough to locate just what he wanted can make a huge hit.

Listen closely as to the he says. Romance is all about watching the interests and thoughts from the other person. While roses can be a super romantic item for you personally, he might not, make that most likely not, think they’re nearly as romantic like a romantic surprise of courtside seats for that Nix game. His interest level is paramount factor.

Hot Romantic Gifts

Should you simply can’t get all looking forward to buying something strictly manly, consider something extremely spicy. This doesn’t suggest a hot taco but it might mean some kind of special chocolate body paint or hot massage oil. You’ll grab his attention with one of these hot romantic gifts.

Sweet and Sensitive

Most likely the hot gifts simply aren’t romantic either to of you but something gentler and sweeter can tickle his fancy. Find several different ways to say, “I love you,” with romantic gifts which do it for you. You can find from a keychain with a bolt and nut saying, “I’m nuts about you” to bus tokens with designed for special moments. The tokens have romantic messages for example good for a hug, kiss or all of your love.

Maybe you want some thing practical in romantic gifts. Interlocking his and hers romantic mugs may be just the romantic surprise you’ve sought out in a gift. The his and hers mugs are personalized and fit together perfectly similar to the two of you. If you love matching and personalized romantic surprises, you will also love matching bathrobes, slippers and pillowcases filled with both your names.

Other sweet and romantic gifts could be display items with each of your names. One of the unique romantic surprises is really a painted picture of a beach on artist canvas having a heart in the sand. Obviously, you can order the picture to include each of your names inside the heart. You may also order the same picture for any welcome mat letting all people to your home know that behind the doors there is nothing but love.

Romantic Surprises for that Start of a Relationship

If you haven’t dated too long, some of these romantic gifts might not work for the stage of your relationship. Something more subtle may be the best choice for romantic surprises for all those just recently involved. You can get an ideal yet inexpensive gift when you purchase a personalized giant cookie to state, “I think you’re special” or “You’re #1.” You are able to choose whatever message you need to send without stepping across any type of good taste.

Personalized fortune cookies will also be a great idea. You can sneak these romantic surprises onto his plate after dinner. You’re able to make any message you need to fill the fortune cookies, so one like, “You recently meant an ideal woman,” or “Someone near to you thinks you’re special,” is really a romantic surprise but won’t send him running away in fear.

Allow the World Know He’s Special

In case your relationship evolved and you want the planet to know how much you care about your guy, an excellent romantic gift is flowers delivered to his office. Women aren’t the only real ones that love an unexpected of flowers. Men like them as well, especially when you send them to work where his co-workers can see just how much you care. Other romantic surprises to possess delivered to his office incorporate a box of chocolate dipped strawberries or perhaps a basket of fresh fruit having a special note. You could even sent a variety of nuts with a note, “I’m nuts in regards to you.”

One of the Best Romantic Surprises

One of the most inexpensive and yet delightful romantic surprises that’s perfect no matter how long you’ve dated is really a picnic basket filled with lunch along with a bottle of your favorite beverage. Regardless of what type of food you select, allow it to be his favorite. If you’re more involved, order special glasses together with your names engraved and a special wine bottle with romantic messages around the label. You’re sure to get his attention whether you’ve only dated a couple of months or are married for a long time with this surprise. If it’s the center of winter, then a picnic is better still. You can hold it in the center of the living room or for those much more hardy than most, in the center of the snow.

The Beauty Of Growing Cherry Tomatoes In A Hanging Basket Container

Copyright (c) 2010 Kaye Dennan

Ripe cherry tomatoes growing in hanging pots are really a delightful sight. I bought my first one from a garden center. The set up of the cherry tomatoes looking so delightful in a hanging basket container was something that I have not forgotten and am planning to grow myself another one this week. They just make you want to rush inside and make a beautiful, healthy salad.

I made a mistake with the one I purchased because I hung it where I could see it but it did not get full sunlight, just dappled light. This caused the plant not to grow as well as it should have but I won’t fall for that again. The green tomatoes that were on it did ripen, but the plant didn’t really grow that well after that.

Setting Up A Hanging Basket With Cherry Tomatoes:

– Purchase a wire basket, not too small. I am going to aim for one 14 inches across the top. I will put a coco liner in to hold the soil

– The soil will be prepared with organic compost and 8-8-8 fertilizer

– I am going to use the container watering method so I am going to ‘plant’ 2 small plastic containers either side of the plant and will be filling those with water so that they drip feed the water, rather than the once or twice a day watering of the whole pot

– Find a spot to hang the basket where it receives at least 6 hours full sunlight every day

This time I am going to hang the basket from the side of the patio roof where it will get the sun nearly all day long. That is why I have chosen this particular watering method because I know the plant will receive water slowly throughout the day.

What Tomato Plants Will I Grow?

I am going to plant a bright red cherry tomato and then in about 5 weeks I will plant another hanger and this time will choose a yellow grape tomato and this way I will be spreading out the picking time. I am so looking forward to getting them set up. I am so excited.

Since the time when I bought the first set up we have moved and where we live now we have wild parrots visit morning and night for a feed. It will be interesting to find out who wins the fight over these beautiful cherry tomatoes! The parrots or me!

A Rustic Home Patio – 9 Handy Heritage Hints

There’s something about the rustic look that makes an area not only look but feel warm and inviting. Turn your outdoor patio or entertaining area into a treasure trove of yesteryear with some simple solutions to brighten up the dullest space by using some of these ideas.

1. Rustic outdoor furniture

Transform the area instantly with the use of wood or wrought iron furniture. Old and worn out timber pieces can be neatened up with a light sanding, followed by a rich stain and a coat of varnish.

Wrought iron benches, love seats and tables scattered around the patio provide additional seating for informal gatherings. Create your own rustic furniture with logs and leather.

2. Ornaments or plaques

Liven up the walls with some relics from the past. Wire candle holders will also add to the atmosphere for night time entertaining.

Get creative with those bits and pieces you were going to throw away. Take an old clock and put a timber or cane frame around it. Hang a weathervane or bird feeder from the rafters of the veranda.

3. Heritage colours

It is no accident that heritage buildings give a sense of stepping back in time. Using the accepted heritage colours on painted surfaces gives a genuine feeling of the past. Use colours such as clotted cream, mission brown or rivergum green to brighten up an old dresser.

4. Wind chimes

Wind chimes not only look appealing they have the added benefit of filling the outdoor patio area with sound.

Make your own with heavy pipes and wooden chucks or hefty hollowed out bamboo poles.

5. Straw and bamboo furnishings

Floor mats or blinds made from straw and bamboo are pleasing to the eye and have practical uses as well. Position a blind to protect from the afternoon sun. Use straw or cane matting as placemats or drink coasters on the table.

Fill some cane baskets with pine cones, pot pouri or other seed pods.

6. Plants

Plants in clay or terracotta pots or hanging baskets will remind you of your childhood holidays spent with grandparents or weekends in the country.

Train vines and creepers along a wrought iron trellis or arches. or hanging baskets will remind you of your childhood holidays spent with grandparents or weekends in the country.

7. Lighting fixtures

Keep it old with wrought iron frames that use iron cups for encasing the light fixtures or use candles in wire holders hung along the edges of the veranda. Scour the second had shops for others cast offs. You’ll be surprised what a quick clean and fresh coat of paint can achieve. Add a new shade in nostalgic fabric and tassels.

8. Garden Bridge

Wooden bridges over fish ponds can give any yard an instant rustic feel. Use recyled hardwood timbers for the hand rails and railway sleepers for the floor. Bridge kits can be bought on line if you want to build your own. Not only do bridges provide a walkway from one side of the pond to the other but they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye and create a focal point while looking out from your patio.

9. Handcrafted items

Nothing says rustic as well as handcrafted items. Use left over scraps of fabric or timber to create wall plaques and table ornaments. Line an old cane basket with a hand sewn placemat as a bread warmer or hand the drinks around on a tray made out of wooden triangular off cuts. The internet is a great source for ideas on hand made goods or head down to any charity fete if you’re not so handy yourself.

What about a timber or wrought iron wine rack hanging on the wall or ceramic statues on timber shelving? Don’t stop with these nine ideas to create a rustic look for your outdoor patio. The only limits are your imagination.

How to Make Dried Flowers Yourself?

Want to make your garden’s summer flowers last all year? Ok, the easiest way to bring your garden flowers indoor and dry them.

Pictures from: http://www.made-in-china.com/products-search/hot-china-products/Dried_Flowers.html

First: Harvesting Flowers

It is best to cut your flowers in the morning hours after the dew has evaporated from the plants. Once cut, group stems into bunches using rubber bands (pure rubber rubber bands work best) and remove them from the sunlight as soon as possible.

There are definite developmental times which are best for cutting flowers for drying. This can be very specific for different plants or even different cultivators of the same plant. In general, it is best to pick immature flowers (ones that are not completely open) since flowers continue to open during the drying process. If you pick a flower at the time that it looks perfect, it will continue to open while drying, leaving you with a flower past that ‘perfect stage’. Most people pick flowers too late. For example, have you ever seen a pretty dried rose? If you really look at it, the flower is still fairly closed. Avoid harvesting flowers too mature in development. Such flowers will generally shed upon drying and will not hold up well in arrangements.

We offer specific picking and growing recommendations for each flower we grow. Just click on any dried flower name on any of our lists to obtain a wealth of specific information including pictures!

Second: Preserving Flowers

With only a few exceptions, we air dry all our flowers. We simple hang flower bunches upside down on wire (over two miles of it is stretched in our circa 1860 barns). The barns offer ideal conditions: 1) darkness; 2) very good airflow; 3) cool updrafts; 4) perfect (usually) humidity levels. Once you have cut your flowers, it is important to remove them from the sunlight as soon as possible. This, along with drying in the dark, is the most important factor in maintaining good color.

Note:

1)How to Hang Flower Bunches

Suspend a 1/2-inch-diameter horizontal pole or pipe from the ceiling. If fastening hooks into your ceiling or walls is not an option, use tripods or two high-backed chairs to support the pole. A bent paper clip makes a perfect hanger for your bunches. Put newspaper or a drop cloth on the floor under the hanging bunches to catch fallen leaves, seeds, and petals. Hang bunches far enough apart to allow good air circulation.

2)How Long to Hang Flowers to Dry

The drying process takes from 10 to 20 days, depending on the plant. When dried, the stems should snap. You must test the flowers for dryness. Dissect one or two, and make sure the flowers” insides are thoroughly dry.

Some flowers, such as delphiniums, keep their color better if dried quickly near sources of warm air such as a heater. Large, many-flowered blooms such as dill, fluffy grasses, and Queen Anne”s lace, should be dried upright, not hanging upside down.

3) How to Dry Flowers with Silica?

Silica-gel drying is done in shallow, airtight, plastic (or glass) containers or trays. I dry many flowers at once using a 10- by 18-inch airtight plastic container. Yours need not be that big, but make sure that the flowers aren’t crowded. Spread the flowers out, face up, on a 1-inch (minimum depth) bed of crystals. Carefully spoon or sprinkle more silica on top until you’ve completely covered the flowers with at least another inch of crystals. Drying flowers with single-petal structures, such as daisies, facedown is another technique, but my results have been identical using both approaches. To dry flowers facedown, create a small mound for the flower head, place the flower head facedown on it, and add silica over the flower until it is covered. Flowers can be almost touching, and because similar kinds of flowers dry at the same rate, you may wish to group similar blooms in the same container. Seal the container, and don’t disturb it for three to four days.

Remove delicate blossoms very carefully. Shake or brush off the crystals lightly with a soft artist’s paintbrush. Leaving flowers in desiccant too long makes them very fragile, so remove flowers right away once you’ve determined that they’re dry enough.

4) How to Use Sand to Dry your Flowers?

Sand must be very fine, clean, dry, and preferably salt free. Sifting is recommended to remove coarse grains and foreign particles. Rinsing the sand in water several times to remove any soil is also recommended. Damp sand can be dried in an oven by placing in shallow pans and baking at 250 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Be sure to use only flowers in their prime and process them quickly to prevent wilting.

To dry with sand, place an inch or two of sand in a container; scoop away a small amount of sand to form a depression on the surface; place the flower head upright in this depression and press the sand in and around the outside of the flower to support it. Next, scoop a little sand into your hand and allow it to trickle in a fine stream around each petal. Start with the outer petals and work inward row by row, allowing the sand to build up equally on all sides of each petal so its position and shape are not altered. Flowers dried with sand are fragile so be very careful when removing them from the sand. Notice that flowers must be stored in a strong carton to protect the petals from breaking.

5Using a Microwave Oven to Dry Flowers

The latest and fastest method to dry flowers is to use a combination of silica gel and a microwave oven.

With the use of a microwave, you can now dry your flowers very quickly. Flowers should be gathered at their peak or else they will turn brown. Use any of the drying agents (silica gel, sand, borax) in a container deep enough to cover the bloom. Leave a 1/2 inch stem on the flower, and place it face up on a 1/2 inch layer of drying agent. Carefully sprinkle enough agent to cover the flower, and place it in the microwave along with a small bowl of water. Do not remove the flowers from the agent immediately, but set them aside for several hours. Listed below are some times for drying flowers in a microwave.

By using air drying and other methods also, many flowers can be preserved for year-round enjoyment. Plan now to include some flowers in your garden for drying, and check nearby fields and road sides throughout the summer and fall for more dried plant materials.

Third: Care of Dried Flowers

Routine dusting can be accomplished using a real feather duster or hair blow dryer on it’s lowest setting.

Last: Storing and Enjoying Dried Flowers

We recommend wrapping the flowers in newspaper and placing them in a cardboard box. Do not store the box containing the dried flowers where it is unusually damp (some basements) or very dry (some attics). Also, a lot of people think you should never store dried flowers outside (it would be way to cold). This is simply not true. Temperatures are not important. In fact, a garage can be an ideal place for storing dried flowers. Actually, if your home is heated by forced air, the preferred place to store dried flowers would be in a outside building away from the dry heat.

In general, dried flowers should remain out of direct sunlight while you enjoy them in their final state. This will minimize fading over time. We also suggest not to place dried flowers in the path of forced air heat registers. This extremely dry air is very hard on dried flower structure (causes shattering).

Suggestion for use of dried flowers would include wreaths, swags, sheaths, bouquets, and sprays. Simply hanging dried flowers in a room can be very appealing. Also, placing clusters of bunches in a basket, as though you just came in from a garden, is most attractive.

Caution: if you do store your dried flowers outside, make sure you protect them from small rodents and insects (a few mothballs will work).

Finally, I should to say that drying flowers can be addictive! Before long, wreaths will adorn all your doors, and swags will hang from every wall. And they’ll all have come from your own garden. Talk about an extended season! You’ll soon see why dried flowers are often called “everlastings”.
